Smart and Sustainable Cities Cluster

The Smart and Sustainable Cities Cluster aims to advance the science of smart and sustainable urban systems by addressing both fundamental science questions and key policy questions related to generative design, technology innovation, sociotechnical transitions, and planning and governance of networks of future cities.

The missions of the cluster include:

  • Developing new data, methods, and science to assess sociotechnical drivers and sustainability outcomes nexus in urban systems across spatial (local to global) and temporal scales

  • Advancing comparative studies, typology studies, and scalability studies to develop a generalizable science of theories of change in relation to technology innovation and sociotechnical processes in diverse city types

  • Linking up-stream future city and smart city research with down-stream innovations in the planning, design, management, and governance of cities.
